President Bush joins the Pope and fundamentalist Christians in supporting a “culture of life.” Those who support it are well represented in the 22 percent of the electorate whose most important issue was “moral values” in November exit polls (80 percent voting for Bush).

Pro-life in this context means protecting dependent human life forms, from those with severe brain damage like Terri Schiavo to tiny embryos at risk to be killed in an abortion to frozen embryos no longer wanted for artificial insemination that might be sacrificed to cultivate stem cells to fight debilitating disease.
