Newsweek’s poll following the Republican National Convention made headlines with its 13-point bounce for the Bush-Cheney ticket. Lost in the hoopla was a disturbing finding. Question 18 in the poll asked respondents “Do you think Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq was DIRECTLY involved in planning, financing, or carrying out the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, or not?” Unlike most polling questions which ask for an opinion, this question has a factual answer. President Bush admitted on September 17 last year that, “we have no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with September the 11th.”
The Newsweek poll found more than half of Republicans as well as a third of Democrats still believe Saddam Hussein was directly involved in 9/11. As we commemorate the anniversary of that tragic event, we should be asking why so many people believe a falsehood.
We increasingly live in a world of political spin. As soon as the President admitted there was no connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11, he made the remark ambiguous by asserting, “there’s no question that Saddam Hussein had al-Qaeda ties.” Read the rest of this entry »
