Welcome to Make Democracy Work!
When I began writing more regular opinion columns after the November 2004 election and now two plus years later, we have gone through another election cycle. The hard work of democracy goes far beyond elections, but, too often, information is hard to find, intentionally misrepresented, and riddled with dehumanizing personal attacks.
I certainly DO have positions, but believe our democratic discourse requires we debate issues on their embedded values, while also looking at the best evidence we have. During elections, politicians, too frequently, give rather glib positions and make exaggerated attacks on opponents, while critically important policy issues and the values that underlie them get shortshift.
Can one web site change that? Let's find out! This web site is designed to make politicians more accountable, while improving our public discourse on important policy issues.
Please be patient as I work on rebuilding and developing the web site (still about 60 columns aren't back from August when a previous web host had a catastrophic crash). In the meantime, if you have ideas, share them, or post them, and join the subscription list for updates at the web site.
